A few weeks ago, composer Phillip Golub, now studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, wrote a piece for LAL’s blog on Abū l-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī and his verse as the inspiration for his latest work. On March 3, that piece—with the al-Maʿarrī-appropriate title of The Necessity of What is Unnecessary—debuted at the Milton Court Concert Hall in London in a performance by the six-person EXAUDI Vocal Ensemble, conducted by James Weeks.

You can see the video of the performance here.
